The time has come to think about the summer.... and Speech and Debate Camp!
Speech and Debate camps are offered throughout the summer, so if interested you can find one that fits your time schedule. While certainly not necessary to succeed, they do offer an opportunity to vastly improve your skills- as any concentrated period of study will do.
While the camps can be expensive. Many offer financial aid, Needham High offers the Eloranta Scholarships which can defray the cost if received, and there are other bodies which also offer financial assistance.
I note only a few debate and speech/congress camps below (in order!) Upon request, I can put you in touch with Needham students and parents about their experiences with certain camps.
A word on location, be it for speech and debate camps or any other summer experience. Some people choose the location with the thought it might improve admissions chances at that particular school. This is rarely the case. Many summer programs are run by organizations which pay the college to host them (all those empty dorms!). It is a big revenue source for schools. Hundreds, even thousands of high school students sometimes, are cycled even through places like Harvard. The education they offer may be great and the opportunity to get experience in dorm living may be equally great, but mere attendance won't change the odds of admission any more than eating Harvard beets will help one get into Harvard, as one coach in New York whose tournament we attend yearly puts it.
That said- (and again, this is a very abbreviated list, we have had students with fantastic experiences at other camps...)
