Summer Camps

The time has come to think about the summer.... and Speech and Debate Camp!

Speech and Debate camps are offered throughout the summer, so if interested you can find one that fits your time schedule. While certainly not necessary to succeed, they do offer an opportunity to vastly improve your skills- as any concentrated period of study will do.

The camps can be expensive. Many offer financial aid, Needham High offers the Elorandra Scholarships which can defray the cost if received, and there are other bodies which also offer financial assistance.

I note only a few debate and speech/congress  camps below (in order!)  Upon request, I can put you in touch with students and parents about their experiences with certain camps.

I am , of course, always happy to talk about particular camps.

Best, PW

1. Debate
a. Mean Green Workshop:  http://www.meangreenworkshops.com
Various Dates.  Located in Texas.  We have had a number of students attend

b. University of Kentucky
: http://www.uky.edu/Provost/ChellgrenCenter/Debate/institutes_LD.htm

June 20th/26 - July 10th. Located in Kentucky. Slightly cheaper than others.

c. National Debate Forum:
http://www.nationaldebateforum.com/
June 27th - July 11th in Ft. Lauderdale; July 18th - August 1st in Boston. We have had a number of students attend.

d. Victory Briefs Institute: http://victorybriefs.com
Various dates. Located at UCLA.
VBI is the largest debate institute- and also a bit of a meat market in terms of #s of people. Instruction may be very good, or not so good.

e. Stanford National Forensics Institute:
http://www.snfi.org/camp/36/1st-&-2nd-weeks:-core-ld-program.html
July 25th - August 7th/14th.  Located at Stanford University.

2. Public Forum

For people who think they may want to participate in Public Forum, there is a brand new institute this year at Harvard.
I made no warranties about it, though the staff seems reasonable.

Harvard Institute for Public Forum Debate: http://www.planetdebate.com/harvard
July 4th - 16th.

3. Speech/Congress
For Student Congress and extemp --they may attend the National Debate Forum's Extemp Lab Institute:
 http://www.nationaldebateforum.com/
(they have speech as well)

4. All Speech and Debate Areas

People have attended both of these:

a. University of Texas National Institute in Forensics: http://commstudies.utexas.edu/camps/UTNIF-IE/coaches/index.html
June 22nd – July 6th.
This is ‘The Grandparent of them all”.
